针对外界猜测台湾问题是中美元首会晤中方首要关切议题，外交部发言人林剑7日在例行记者会上答问时表示，台湾问题是中国核心利益中的核心，是中美关系政治基础中的基础。恪守一个中国原则和中美三个联合公报、恪守美国历届政府在台湾问题上所作承诺是美方应尽的国际义务，也是中美关系稳定、健康、可持续发展的必要前提。中方维护国家统一和领土完整的决心坚定不移，“台独”分裂与台海和平水火不容，维护台海和平稳定就必须旗帜鲜明反对“台独”。
